Good ol’ Tesco treated us to a weekend away with Clubcard rewards, vouchers whatever they are called these days. We stayed at the Bobsleigh Hotel in Hemel Hempstead in a suite which was fantastic for us – plenty of room, separate sleeping area for kids, quiet (at least once the smalls were asleep that is). Breakfast was delicious – a great selection of cereals, fruit, pastries, cold meats and cheese followed by a freshly cooked to order Full English for us, and beans and scrambled eggs on toast for the boys. Anyway, enough about the hotel!
We arrived Friday lunchtime and went to explore the city of St Albans. The shopping area looked great but I knew it would be not a pleasant experience with children. After lunch at Wagamama’s (where we spotted Bordan Tkachuk, from The Apprentice also lunching!) we headed to the Verulamium Park. This was an excellent move on a crisp Spring day where the boys could be let off the lead (with a little careful handholding around the lake of course!). They loved feeding the ducks, playing in the park and playing hide and seek amongst the trees. We rounded off the day with a trip to the little café where the boys had ice lollies (yes even though it was freezing outside!) and we had hot chocolate and coffee.
Saturday morning we decided to brave a trip to the big smoke! This would be the boys first trip to London as well. First stop was Buckingham Palace to watch the Changing of the Guards. It was a bitterly cold day I have to say, no sign of the sun at all and hanging around waiting for things to start was a little tiresome for us nevermind Ethan. Once it got started he loved watching “the marching men” and had his photo taken with a policeman. After this we needed to warm up so headed to the Museums, starting off with the Natural History for the Dinosaurs! Noah was quite impressed with them but I think even Ethan could see through them a bit. I quite enjoyed the T-Rex although it would have been more fun if it was actual size hee hee. We were starving by now so had lunch in the Restaurant which was really good – yummy food and very child friendly (obviously I guess!). As the boys are still a bit young we thought a lot of the NHM would be a bit much for them so headed to the Science Museum which has an area for children to play in the basement. This was a great move as they love the little playarea – I didn’t think Noah would ever leave the water play! We also watched a bubble show which they both really enjoyed.
Sunday morning dawned and after checking out from the hotel we headed to Whipsnade Zoo! Today the sun was shining on us but it was still pretty parky. Nevertheless we had a marvelous time. I do have my doubts about how happy animals are in the zoo but they all did look pretty contented even if it isnt quite the same as their natural habitat. Favourites were the giraffes, the baby rhino, feeding time at the penguins, the train ride, elephants, zebras and the Meer cats. It was all a lovely day out and the food in the café was good too, which is just as well when you are in hotels and don’t have a picnic spare. After such an action packed few days we headed home tired but happy, so now I can get on with planning the next one.. hee hee!
