Our big man, Ethan has longed to have a go at Taekwondo for ages, basically since he saw pictures of it on a noticeboard at the leisure centre. I promised him that when he got to Level 5 at swimming he could go so, last October, he started going one evening a week to a class. As I understand it there is more than one kind of Taekwondo. One is sporty and is the one they did at the Olympics and the other is more traditional and focuses on the Korean martial art. Anyway the one we do is the former and the class he attends is part of the British Taekwondo.
He goes to a group with other children aged 4-7 years. When he turns 7 he can go to the adult class which follows his class at the moment. At the moment it is just a bit of fun for him but he really enjoys it. It is good to channel these spirited energies that he has and hopefully this will help him in the future. I was hoping his younger brother would like it too but at the moment he is a little small to listen and behave! Hopefully as he gets nearer to 4 he will.
Last week he bought the Taekwondo outfit out of his birthday money. He was chuffed to bits with it and we were convinced he could kick a little higher with it on!
The group are now working towards their yellow belt which will give them a real sense of achievement when they get there, and boost their confidence in their abilities.
Doesn’t he look cute in his little outfit!
