Running until 15 February, the fabulous Nottingham Playhouse is running a new show, adapted from Susie Boyt’s autobiographical memoir, My Judy Garland Life,
Taking you back to a time when music came in vinyl form and the glamour of celebrity was acute the performance doesn’t fail to thrill. The story is a little disjoined in places but essentially captures the idolation Susie, played brilliantly by Faye Elvin, feels for Judy and how Judy’s life helped her deal with issues in her own. Sally Ann Triplett is absolutely amazing as Judy Garland, capturing Garland’s distinctive voice. There are lots of goosebump moments where you feel you are actually listening to the legend herself.
Accompanying Faye and Sally Ann are the backing band played by Stefan Bednarczyk , William Oxborrow and Delroy Brown. My favourite scene featured the whole cast in a cabbie’s office, keeping Judy company on their night shift.
I was invited along with some friends to watch the show. For anyone with children you will know it is a huge and rare treat to be going out on a school night! We had a brilliant time and would highly recommend this show for stage and musical fans.
