The cold weather we have had recently has brought many birds into our garden. Today we had robins, blue tits, pigeons, blackbirds and starlings sat on the fence looking hungrily at us.

So we have been putting out bird seed, peanuts, sultanas and coconut out for them. Ethan even put out an old beaker of water so they could have a drink. These treats also tempt the squirrels to pinch the fat balls and they love the coconut!

Today we had a go at making our own fat balls…

  • We took a pinecone, a block of lard, good quality bird seed and some black sunflower seeds.
  • We squished up the lard and added handfuls of seeds to it.
  • We then padded the mixture around the pinecones.
  • Rolled it in the seed and tied it up well with string.

delicious for birds

Then hung it on the tree to await our feathered (and furry) friends!

I remember seeing something like this on Blue Peter when I was younger and never did it. Thanks for bringing it back to my memory I’m going to do this with the boys. xxx
