Italians really know how to enjoy their food and it plays a really central role in life. Eating as a family is the perfect time to share stories and getting together around the table is what family life is all about.
We have spent lots of summers in Calitri in southern Italy and have seen this way of eating together in action. We even made our own pasta with the locals!
Calitri has two local dishes – canazze (pasta with a beef ragu and cheese mixed in) and cingoli (gnoochi with yummy tomato sauce). We have enjoyed these at the awesome Osteria Tre Rose where huge bowls are brought out for families to share for lunch. It is just perfect!
As luck would have it we don’t have to get a flight over to Italy to experience this magic as Prezzo have a dish on their menu – La Famiglia – which is just as pasta is served in Italy.
Prezzo’s La Famiglia takes all the pain out of choosing what to eat, and then being disappointed when someone else’s dish looks nicer than yours, as a huge bowl of food is place in the middle of the table for you to dig in. From a choice of all the pasta classics – Penne Arrabiata, Spaghetti Bolognese, Spaghetti Carbonara or Penne Alla Rusticana – a family of four can dig into the same bowl, sharing and enjoying the same food together topped of course with plenty of parmesan cheese! We tucked in along with a side order of delicious garlic bread with mozzerella.
We each received a small side plate and, as he was nearest, Dad took charge in dishing up everyone’s fiirst helping of food. As a massive pasta fan he gave himself an extra big serving!
There is definitely something extra special about going out to eat that you can’t capture at home with all the distractions. It gives you the opportunity for everyone to relax and focus on being there together. It was really lovely to see the boys sharing out the pasta and bread to make sure that everyone had equal amounts.
Dessert is obviously a must and what better than a delicious Italien gelato! I must say the chocolate with sea salt ice cream is awesome!
