Chatsworth House in beautiful Bakewell, and home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, has been taken over in the most delightful way, by Mole, Ratty, Badger and Mr Toad in their own adaptation of the wonderful Wind in the Willows. Scenes from the book are captured as you journey through the magnificent house really bringing to life the festive period.

We haven’t been inside the house before as a family and this was the perfect way to keep the boys’ imaginations captured as they looked for the cuddly badgers throughout the journey through the forest to the chapel with the singing mice, through to Badger’s kitchen, see Mr Toad’s latest fad, catch Mole snoring away in bed and the magificent feast laid out for Weasel to name a few of the highlights.

It was also a brilliant place to pick up some tips for next year’s Christmas styling with plenty of Christmas trees, wreathes and decorations to admire! So magical!

We visited on a particularly rainy day so will definitely be returning to make the most of the beautiful gardens, complete with a Maze!

On our way home we popped into the farmshop which was such a good idea with some amazing treats – cheeses, meat, pickles, olives, pies and  cakes as well as beers, ciders and loads of other yummy things. We did treat ourselves to quite a few things (it is still Christmas after all). Such a pity the detox starts in a few days!

If you are quick Chatsworth is open this weekend (2 and 3 January) before they close their doors to no doubt de-Christmas the house ready for the new season. At £70 for a family of 5 this isn’t your average day out but it definitely is a special occasion and perfect to make the most of family time before school is back.

Have fun and let me know what you thought!

  1. Aw I love this, what a fun idea – and the house looks beautiful, I’ll add it to the list for when we’re next in the area!

It’s your dads favourite place and we used to go regularly, it’s so beautiful and the gardens are really lovely to walk in. So glad you all enjoyed yourselves. Xxx
